AJHS (American Jewish Historical Society) is the oldest ethnic, cultural archive in the United States. They needed a range of collateral producing to market their latest symposium on Fighting Fascism, taking cues from graphic design of the past, while reflecting the political climate of the country in the present.
Looking to the past
As an archive, AJHS has a wealth of material from years gone by. We started by looking through parts of the archive to understand the design cues of the time, and what assets were available for us to use in the design of posters, presentation books, and more.
We focussed in on a variant of the famous Uncle Sam conscription poster, this time reading ‘Protect your America. Stop Nazi spies!’ Created as a stamp, it had everything we were looking for.
Protests haven’t changed
Looking through the archive it was clear that the designs surrounding protests haven’t changed much. Bold type, striking graphics, and modernist direction ran through everything past and present. Using the stamp as a repeating pattern we were able to produce a poster and supporting designs that would stop you in your tracks and question whether this is a current protest or a look back at history.
